About the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa
Established in September 2000 by the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr Valli Moosa, the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) is the only officially recognised quality assurance body for tourism products in South Africa. Operating as a business unit of South African Tourism, the TGCSA’s vision is to implement a recognisable and credible globally benchmarked system of quality assurance for accommodation and MESE (Meetings Exhibitions and Special Events) experiences, which can be relied upon by visitors when making their choice of establishment.
The stars with colours of their flag adorning thousands of accommodation and MESE establishments throughout South Africa is testament of the TGCSA’s commitment to ensuring that establishments maintain high standards of quality. They achieve this by literally “putting the stars where they belong!”
There are nine main types of establishments that cater for all travellers desires. These range from Hotels, Lodges, Bed & Breakfasts, Country Houses, Guest Houses, Self Catering Units, Caravan & Camping, Backpackers & Hostelling as well as Meetings, Exhibitions and Special Events (MESE) venues. Establishments who have been graded by an Accredited Grading Assessor and display the TGCSA Star insignia provides assurance of quality and service excellence to our domestic and international visitors.
Visitors wishing to verify whether establishments are graded or not, are encouraged to visit www.tourismgrading.co.za for access to ALL quality graded establishments.
It is important for all tourism industry members to use and promote Star Graded establishments, to help bring about the highest levels of quality assurance, the best possible value for money and the recognition that customer expectations are paramount in this country.
This will truly mark South Africa as a nation that welcomes the world
